Scientific research is an essential and distinctive characteristic of the Department of Biochemistry. Research is a focus activity for our Department which contributes to the generation of original and relevant knowledge in the areas of biomedicine and biotechnology, promotes the academic development and background of the faculty, and establishes a fertile intellectual and scientific environment through the exchange and debate of new discoveries and ideas. A significant portion of the research activities are associated to PhD and MD PhD programs, both national and international, a fundamental task for creating the new generation of biomedical scientists. Funding is provided both by local as well as international research agencies (including the National Institutes of Health, The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, The Welcome Trust, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, among others) and also by consortium and consultantship agreements with national and international research centers and laboratories, of the biomedical, biotechnological and pharmacological areas. Finally, research activities are also outreached to the community at large through seminars, forum and dissemination of information to the public. Key discoveries from  members of the Department of Biochemistry can be extracted from the research interests and selected publications list on international peer-reviewed journals of the faculty.
